Since its founding, the Commission has conducted a series of studies and issued a number of reports on a broad range of civil rights issues. Among these are reports concerning the strengthening of fair housing laws, continued barriers to voter registration, equal employment and affirmative action policies in the private sector, the jurisdiction of the federal courts in school desegregation cases, and comprehensive reviews of the civil rights policies of the Reagan, Bush and Clinton Administrations. In each instance, the Commission's work has been timed to coincide with ongoing public debate over the issues studied.

In addition to being used as source documents by journalists, scholars, civil rights groups, corporate and community leaders, and national policymakers, Commission reports continue to generate significant demand from the public. Moreover, because of the composition of the Commission and the quality of its work, the Commission has frequently been called on by Congress and by executive branch agencies to offer its views on key issues. Through these efforts, the Commission continues to maintain its role as an independent, credible source of information and monitor of federal policies and practices on important civil rights issues.
